NASHIR 2016

On Wednesday February 3rd, SAR was proud to host its tenth annual Nashir Choral Festival. More than 200 students representing the choirs of North Shore Hebrew Academy, The Yeshivah of Flatbush, Ramaz Upper School, Golda Och Academy, and The Abraham Joshua Heschel High School, joined the SAR choir for a day of singing and learning. The day began with a group sing led by Nick Page. Afterwards, students were treated to a variety of workshops led by Nick Page, Jazz musician Jocelyn Medina, Barbershop quartet Huson Line, and The Western Wind Ensemble. Jocelyn Medina taught the students a choral arrangement of the Jazz classic, “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing” while the Western Wind Ensemble focused on a cappella performances of early American folk music. Hudson Line taught the students about the Barbershop sound while teaching the students to perform several “barbershop tags.” A Nashir veteran, Nick Page, taught his unique blend of world folk music. At the end of the day there was a concert for the whole school given by the participating choirs. The grand finale of the concert was a performance by all of the choirs of the song “Gonna Get Through This World.” It was a most fitting way to conclude an exciting and uplifting day.
