I love the beginning of this section of Psalm 119 - Your Hands Have Made Me and Formed Me - It speaks simultaneously of the wondrous way that we are constructed in the natural womb of our mothers, but also of the way He has formed my life since I consciously yielded it to Him over two decades ago. I have not known the way to take in order to draw closer to Him, but He has guided my steps over and over again. - There are two seemingly prideful verses contained here (v74 and v79) but if they are considered in the context of God making His Temple IN the Psalmist, then those who turn to the Psalmist are really turning to the God who lives in him. That God would come and dwell with us and have compassion on us who have scorned Him and resisted Him at every turn is a gift of the highest magnitude. To Him be all the glory.

When I wrote the music to this section of Psalm 119, it seemed to me that the first verse could be the highlight verse of the entire Psalm: YOU are my portion. Wow. The creator of heaven and earth is MY portion. It echoes what He told Abraham: -I AM your exceeding great reward- and what the Levites got when Israel was divided for the twelve tribes: -You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I AM your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.- There is also evidence of repentance in this section: -I have considered my ways and I have TURNED...- Even one seeking the Lord with ALL his heart, when finding Him must cry out with Isaiah, -Woe is me, I am undone.- Again we find that those who obtain something in the Lord will not be appreciated by those of their generation: -the wicked bind me with ropes...- But despite the persecution, such a one finds companionship with all the generations that have sought after and feared the LORD. What an inheritance.

This Psalm seems to recognize the tendency of the heart to go astray as the writer is pleading with God to direct his footsteps. - Turn my eyes TOWARD Your statutes and NOT toward SELFISH gain. Turn my eyes AWAY from WORTHLESS things. The last line is also significant - Preserve my life in YOUR righteousness.- We need the righteousness of God HIMSELF, not something of our own making that may look good to the religious eye, but eternally speaking, ends up being worthless, selfish -gain

Psalm 119 - Teth - v67 - Before I was afflcted I went astray - reminds me of the section in Isaiah 53 that states - All WE like sheep have gone astray, but the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. - Psalm 119 goes on to say - but NOW I obey Your Word. Years ago, it took affliction in my life to cause me to even consider the possibility that God Himself had to pay a price for my waywardness. More recently, it took a deeper affliction to drive into the place where I would yield to His love for others who have no particular regard for me and perhaps even hate me. I do not have that kind of love naturally. It is a gift of His favor that I do not deserve, but nevertheless that He gives without measure. So I can say, without hesitation, - It was GOOD for me to be afflicted that I might learn HIS decrees - I love this section of Psalm 119 and it is one of my favorite sections musically as well.

Section 2 of Psalm 119 - Every verse begins with the letter Beth. I am intrigued by the line - I seek You with ALL my heart, do not let me stray from Your commands. - How can it be that one seeking God with a whole heart would need God's oversight to keep him on the right path? Does this not imply that our hearts are deceitfully wicked (as Jeremiah declares) and only knowable by God? I think one could make this point from many portions of scripture.

Section 11 of Psalm 119 - I will not deny that there are times of refreshing when walking with God. I praise and thank Him for those times. However, I have also experienced times when He seems to have hidden Himself from the senses. For what purpose is this? I think it is to drive us to Himself and to His awesome provision, hidden in the Law and Prophets. It is there, in Him, without any other external evidence besides that glorious Sign of Jonah, that we find the ultimate refreshing.

The fourth section of Psalm 119 (verses 25-32). Every verse begins with the letter Daleth. I wrote the music to this Psalm in a time of great distress and desolation. God seems to allow such times in order to empty us of our own strength and fill us with His own Spirit which arises from the ashes of despair if we will acknowledge His justice in bringing us to that place.
